Samaria Gorge from Chania: Guided Tour, Ferry Back and How Fit You Really Need to Be

Updated October 8, 2026 · 6 min read

Two sheer, sunlit limestone walls closing in over a dry stream bed of white boulders, with a narrow strip of sky above

The short answer: Samaria is a one-way walk of 16 km, mostly downhill, and every guided tour from Chania is built around that fact. A coach takes you up to the Omalos plateau, you walk down to the sea at Agia Roumeli, a ferry carries you along the south coast, and a coach brings you back. You cannot walk back up, so you cannot turn it into a short visit. If that sounds like more than you want, skip to the end: there are shorter gorges.

What a day on the gorge looks like

The route starts at about 1,250 m on the Omalos plateau and ends at sea level, so it is a descent of more than a kilometre in altitude. Travel sources put the walking time at five to seven hours, and the narrowest point, the Iron Gates, has cliffs rising to around 300 m on both sides. The path is made of loose stones, which is what tires people, not the gradient: the downhill hits knees and toes, and the heat builds from late morning.

The gorge is only open in the dry season, roughly May to mid-October, and it can close in bad weather or extreme heat. If you book for early May or late October, treat the date as provisional and read the operator’s terms on what happens if the park is shut.

The park charges an entrance fee of about €5 per adult, with free entry or a reduced fee for some groups. Whether that ticket is in the tour price differs by operator, so look for it on the booking page. Do the same for the ferry from Agia Roumeli, which is not optional: it is how you get out.

The three guided tours from Chania, compared

The most-reviewed is the full-day Samaria Gorge trek with guide from Chania: €27.60 per person, 9 to 12 hours, 4.6 stars from 3,546 reviews. It is the standard version of the day.

The Samaria Gorge hike with a professional hiking guide costs €28.21 for a stated 14 hours, with 4.7 stars from 1,221 reviews. Its description lists an air-conditioned coach, a safety briefing and help with the park tickets. Fourteen hours is the longest of the three, so expect an early start and a late return.

The guided Samaria hike with pickup from Chania and Rethymno is €26.60 for a full day, 4.5 stars from 1,116 reviews. It names the Iron Gates and the boat ride along the southern coast in its description.

The three prices are within €1.61 of each other, so the difference that matters is the length of the day: one tour states 14 hours, another 9 to 12. Ask for the pickup time too, which depends on your hotel.

What a guide does and does not do

The reason to book a tour rather than go alone is the chain around the walk: transport up to Omalos, tickets, and a seat on the ferry and the coach back. If you are a slow walker, check on the booking page how the operator handles the ferry meeting time, because the day only works if you reach the boat on time.

Who should not book it

  • Anyone who cannot walk five to seven hours on loose stones. Sources describe it as moderately challenging and not suited to people with mobility problems or heart conditions.
  • Small children. It is long and exposed to heat. Operators set their own minimum ages, so read the participation terms on the booking page rather than relying on a general figure.
  • Anyone in worn trainers or sandals. Real shoes, a hat and a large amount of water are the minimum.

The shorter alternatives

Imbros is the usual step down: about half the distance, with a hiking guide and a lunch stop on the coast included in some versions. Our guide to the Imbros Gorge covers it. The Samaria Gorge tours page lists the shorter gorges as well as Samaria itself.

Our pick

For most walkers who are reasonably fit, the standard full-day trek is the one to book: it is the most reviewed, the middle of the price range and the plainest to understand. Choose the 14-hour option only if you want the guide with the safety briefing and are fine with the longer day. If you want a day by the sea with no hike, the boat trips from Chania are the easier choice.
